First Iowa Course Included on
Golfweek's Top 100 Modern Golf Courses
Another year, another great honor for The Harvester Golf
Club and Community. Golfweek's seventh annual America's
Best course rankings are in, this time including The Harvester,
a first for any course in Iowa.
Out of 17,000 golf courses in the country, The Harvester
is number 84 according to Golfweek's Top 100 Modern
Golf Courses. Courses included in the "modern"
era are those built in 1960 and after. For both classic
and modern lists, Golfweek's America's Best rating
team uses criteria including ease and intimacy of routing,
quality of feature shaping, natural setting and overall
land plan, and variety and memorability of par 3s, 4s and
5s.
Almost more exciting than being included on the list, though,
is the fact that one of America's best courses is now in
Iowans' home turf. "The Harvester is the first modern
(post 1960) course in Iowa ever to make our top 100...list,"
says Golfweek senior writer, Bradley Klein. "It
is only the second (Iowa) state course to be rated on our
list, the other being The Wakonda Club in Des Moines, which
was ranked ... on the classical list in 1997-98."
Owner/developer of The Harvester, Dickson Jensen, is honored
by the recognition. "[The list] shows the people and
the state of Iowa the caliber of golf they have in their
own backyard. It is a treat to play a top 100 course, and
now you can play one virtually next door."
Interestingly, out of the 100 on the modern list, only
19 are daily fees accessible to anyone. The others are either
private clubs or resort courses not open to the public.
The Harvester, previously ranked on "10 Best Bargains
in Golf" (Athlon Sports) and "America's
Best Courses for $100 or Less" (Travel & Leisure
Golf) lists, continues to also be one of the most affordable
courses on the list, as well as one of the most accessible.
The ranking for The Harvester proves to be a boon to designer
Keith Foster's resume as well. According to the article,
"Among the 11 rookies on our Modern list are two by
veteran designers for whom recognition is long overdue.
Keith Foster's Harvester Golf Club in Rhodes, Iowa incorporates
a farm theme throughout."
